Behind every agricultural statistic lies the hard work of thousands of farmers who continue to maintain land productivity and ensure food availability in Bireuen Regency. The agricultural sector is not only a source of livelihood for the community but also plays a strategic role in driving the regional economy. In 2025, the agricultural sector contributed 34.63 percent to the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of Bireuen Regency. This figure shows that agriculture remains one of the important foundations of Bireuen’s economy.

The significant role of the agricultural sector can also be seen from the number of people involved in it. There are 73,589 agricultural households in Bireuen Regency engaged in agricultural production and business activities. This figure reflects the extensive agricultural ecosystem as well as the community’s strong dependence on the sector. Therefore, strengthening the agricultural sector is directly connected to efforts to improve the welfare of the community.

Support for agriculture in Bireuen does not only come from human resources but also from the utilization of technology and mechanization. Currently, there are more than 85,000 agricultural tools and machinery (alsintan) supporting various agricultural activities in the region. The use of agricultural machinery is expected to improve work efficiency and productivity while helping farmers address various challenges throughout the cultivation process. Modernization is becoming increasingly important to ensure that the agricultural sector can continue to develop in line with changing needs and technological advancements.

This potential is reflected, among other things, in Bireuen Regency’s rice production, which reached 158,432 tons in 2025. This production demonstrates the region’s agricultural capacity to meet food needs while contributing to the economic activities of the community. Behind this achievement lies a long process carried out by farmers, from land preparation, planting, and maintenance to harvesting and marketing. Each stage plays an important role in maintaining the sustainability of food production in Bireuen.

However, increasing production needs to be accompanied by efforts to enhance the added value of agricultural products. Downstream processing, or agricultural downstreaming, is one approach that can be implemented so that agricultural products are not only marketed as raw materials but also developed into processed products with higher economic value. In this way, the economic benefits of the agricultural sector can be distributed more widely among farmers and local businesses. The development of processing industries based on local commodities also has the potential to create employment opportunities and stimulate regional economic growth.

In addition to downstream processing, support for local farmers’ products also needs to be continuously strengthened. Agricultural products from Bireuen have opportunities to be further developed through improvements in quality, packaging, marketing, and access to broader markets. Strengthening the supply chain from farmers to consumers is essential to ensure that farmers gain a stronger position within the economic chain. With such support, local agricultural products can not only meet the needs of the community but also achieve greater competitiveness.

The development of the agricultural sector also requires collaboration among various stakeholders. The government, farmers, farmer groups, businesses, educational institutions, and the wider community can all play a role in creating a productive and sustainable agricultural ecosystem. Support for technology, production facilities, farmer capacity building, access to financing, and market certainty needs to be provided continuously. Such collaboration is key to transforming Bireuen’s vast agricultural potential into greater productivity and improved community welfare.

Ultimately, the 34.63 percent contribution of agriculture to GRDP, 73,589 agricultural households, more than 85,000 units of agricultural machinery, and 158,432 tons of rice production are not merely statistical figures. Behind these numbers are the sweat, hard work, and perseverance of Bireuen’s farmers in securing food supplies while driving the regional economy. This tremendous potential must continue to be preserved and developed through agricultural modernization, downstream processing, and stronger support for local farmers’ products. When agriculture advances and farmers become more empowered, Bireuen will become stronger and more prosperous.
